Easy Mica Watercolour Backgrounds featuring Simon Says Stamp’s Layered Chickadee

Updated: Nov 30, 2023

Hello everyone! I have a set of wintry cards featuring Simon Says Stamp's Layered Chickadee (my new favourite die!!!) and Etched Berry Branch (my older favourite die!!) on easy water colour backgrounds. I have a new set of paints ... Iuile Q21 set 1! I used these water colours in my last post, Mica Colour Wash Background featuring Spellbinders’ FOREST SILHOUETTE . I am in love with the gorgeous and shimmery colours.

I borrowed an ink smooshing technique to create these beautiful, textured backgrounds on 3 1/2" square panels of Canson XL watercolour paper. The process is exactly the same, the result is quite different. I only used two colours per panel:

  • Sexy Stranger, Tree

  • Red Rum, Poppycock

  • Silver Fin, Hot Man

  • Dream, Silver Fin

Fun names!!! After the panels were dry, they were spattered with water downed Gouache and mounted on sheet foam.

Layered Chickadee and Etched Berry Branch were die cut from water colour paper. I made the decision not to paint the Etched Berry Branches to enhance the wintry vibe of these scenes.

Layered Chickadee is made up of several die cuts. This sweet bird was painted with just two colours; Sexy Stranger and Ash. The chickadee's cap, the detail below the beak, eye, and beak were painted with Ash; a dark silvery grey. Both colours were used for the body and wing. The die cuts were completely dried before being assembled on a foam die cut of the chickadee's body.

This set of cards is A2 sized, 4 1/4" by 5 1/2". Panels of white card stock of the same size were embossed with an embossing folder by Tim Holtz, Snowfall Speckles, and adhered to the front of the card bases. The foam backed water colour panels were adhered in the upper portion of the base leaving an equal distanced border at the top and sides.

Foam squares were placed on the base of each leaf on Etched Berry Branch. Liquid adhesive was applied to the stem and the branch adhered to the panel. The foam backed chickadee was tucked slightly beneath one of the leaves in the open corner.

Simon Says Stamp's Script Hello and Big Scripty Hugs were die cut from both white card stock and foam and stacked. Sequins or confetti were adhered to the berries picking up one of the colours used on each background. They were embellished with Nuvo Crystal Drops Morning Dew.
