Painting with Pigment Powders featuring Simon Says Stamp’s SUNFLOWER GARDEN

Hello everyone and happy WORLD CARD MAKING DAY! You must check out Simon’s Blog to see a great video featuring SIMON SAYS STAMP’S DESIGNER FAMILY introducing themselves to you … including me! So much fun!

Well Autumn is upon us and I couldn’t be more inspired! The rich colours, the crunch of leaves underfoot, pungent scents … all the blessings of the season. Glorious! Today’s Fall birthday cards are ‘two for one‘! Simon Says Stamp’s SUNFLOWER GARDEN is a gorgeous and large stamp … stamp once and divide by two! If you love ink blended backgrounds but don’t have the time to fussy cut a mask for an intricate image, keep reading! We usually mask images we want to colour to prevent the possibility of the colours becoming muddy when applied over ink blending BUT there is another way!

An oversized panel of Bristol Smooth card stock was ink blended with Distress Oxide inks; Wilted Violet, Candied Apple and Carved Pumpkin. The image was stamped with Versamark ink and embossed with gold embossing powder. The panel was cut down the middle of the image vertically and trimmed to 7” by 3”.

To begin the colouring process, the distress inks were first ’lifted’ from the image. Working in small sections at a time, the image was painted with clean water and then absorbed with paper towel. I began by painting the flower petals. Clean water was painted on the petals and Nuvo Shimmer Powder ‘Solar Flare’ was tapped on to the base of the petals. More water was picked up with the brush to dissolve any powder residue and the colour was moved to the tips of the petal. The rest of elements were painted in the same manner:

  • leaves - Nuvo Shimmer Powder Falling Leaves & Color Burst Merlot

  • flower centres - Nuvo Shimmer Powder Golden Sparkler & Color Burst Sepia

  • stems - Nuvo Shimmer Powder Green Parade

  • small leaves - Color Burst Orange

For more details, please watch the video.

The panels were spattered with Tarnished Brass Distress Stain and watered-down white gouache. When dry, they were mounted on sheet foam and adhered to black card stock slightly larger than the panel for a narrow reveal. The card base measured 7 3/4” by 3 3/4”.

Tim Holtz’ Sentiment Label Stickers ... so cute and awesome! ...were mounted on black foam and adhered to the cards. The card was embellished with lots of gold confetti topped with Nuvo Crystal Drops Morning Dew.
