Stretching Your Stencils … Watercolour featuring Simon Says Stamp’s STYLIZED BUTTERFLY

Hello everyone! My post today features Simon Says Stamp’s gorgeous STYLIZED BUTTERFLY die and stencil set. I am water colouring with stencils, FLOATING LEAVES and FADING FLORAL and the butterfly, of course!… a beautiful effect and another way to use your stencils! Stenciling is quick and easy and stenciling with watercolours is no different!

I am working on Canson XL water colour paper with Mission Gold paints. Pixie Spray, a repositionable, low-tack adhesive is applied to the back of the stencils. This adhesive does an excellent job of temporarily holding the stencil to the paper and sealing the edges so paint does not seep under the cut outs. The stencils can be reused several times without reapplying the Pixie Spray.

Each stencilled background and butterfly begins with a colour wash. A secondary colour is added in to provide depth and blended with a spray of water. The stencils are removed and everything is set aside to dry completely.

The panels are die cut with Pink Fresh Studio’s second largest die in the SLIM STITCHED RECTANGLES die set and mounted on foam. The largest die from this set is used to cut black card stock. The foam backed panels are adhered to the black ones and then onto card bases measuring 3 3/4” by 8 3/4”.

The butterflies are fussy cut and the accompanying stenciled bodies are die cut. The wings are die cut from white cardstock and adhered to just the center of the stenciled butterfly. The body is attached. To adhere the butterflies to the cards, foam is placed on the four quadrants of the wings and glue on the body. Simon’s WAFER die sentiments, HANDLETTERED HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BIG SCRIPTY HUGS, SCRIPT THANKS and SCRIPT HELLO, were cut from both white card stock and foam and stacked. The cards were embellished with iridescent confetti and topped with Nuvo Crystal Drops Morning Dew.
