Watercolouring with Altenew’s Botanical Elegance

Hello friends! It feels like it has been awhile since I have spent a couple of relaxing afternoons watercolouring. This card features Altenew’s Botanical Elegancea preprinted set of floral images … 12 floral designs, 2 of each, one outlined in black and the other in grey, and all on beautiful watercolour paper! LOVE!

  • The images in Botanical Elegance are 5” by 7”. I can by trimming the floral design two 4“ x 5 1/4“.

  • The image I chose, like all of the designs, comes in either a black or grey outline. I selected the grey outline as I wanted it to achieve a no line look.

  • The water colouring was done with Altenew Watercolor Palette.

  • I began with the background, using a wet on wet technique. Clean water was painted around all of the images until the paper had a sheen. Watercolour was then dropped into the wet areas. I mainly used ochre and purple with the latter in the shadow areas. The dry paper of the florals and leaves provides a natural barrier to not allow the paint to cross over.

  • The flowers were coloured with the combination of pink opera and yellow. As I painted, I would alternate petals. The remaining petals were painted after the first set of petals were completely dry. You can test for dryness by lightly touching the paper. If it feels cool to the touch, it is still wet. If it is room temperature, you are ready to paint.

  • The foliage last using three different shades of greens.

  • After the panel was completely dry, a black gel pen was used to colour in the stamens.

  • It was spattered with white gouache using a fan brush and adhered to an A2 sized, black card base.

  • The sentiment from Timeless Sentiments 2 was cut from both black star and the sentiment was stacked and adhered I did use to card front.
